Look for another report for our last day. The Indy Crew.
Last shot
by Indy Crew, 1-03-2013
We gave it a last shot and had a good morning with yellowfin tuna up to 180 pounds. We again had a couple of heart breaks on big fish. We called it a trip midday and are headed up in choppy weather which looks to improve.
HEADED HOME
by Indy Crew, 1-04-2013
Happy new year everyone, we are back on line. The trip this year again was a complete success as we had great fishing with the weather being the only obstacle, windy, windy for most of the time. we over came all that and put together a great trip on quality tuna up to 275 lbs. we had chances at bigguns every day, and as we all know it is always a battle to land the giants, I would say they won their freedom by every way known to man. With a hand full of 200 lb. plus fish mixed in with the beautiful 90 to 190 lb. fish all resting in the R S W tanks we are very happy to say the least. The ride back up to San Diego is showing improvement, so we look forward to some calmer water ahead. We will have another report along the way to give an update on our arrival Monday AM, thanks for checking in, Jeff and the Indy crew

Independence returns from their 12 Day Trip to the Buffer Zone with 3 Cows & lots of smaller fish
by Bill Roecker, 1-07-2013
Independence docked January 7 at Pt. Loma Sportfishing after a 12-day trip with 30 anglers headed up by skipper Jeff DeBuys and chartermaster Ed Tschernoscha of Baja Fish Gear. "This was our New Year's Special," said DeBuys. "We fished at The Buffer Zone, where we found really good biters in the 80 to 130-pound range. We had three cows; early and late in the day were the best times for a shot at a cow."
Jimmy Jimenez of Colton won first place for his 278-pound tuna. He bagged it with a salami mackerel on a 9/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra. He fished with a Penn 50 reel modified by Cofe and a Calstar 770 XXXH rod. "He fought me for two hours," said Jimmy. "He took me around the boat three times. My best fish before was a 211-pounder."
Roy Sakul of Ontario would have won second place, but a shark ended that possibility with two large bites after a little taste of the tuna. Its taped weight was over 240 pounds, on the deck after the mutilated remains were boated.
Shawn Thompson of Bonita took 45 minutes to land his 204-pounder for second place. He said it bit on a sardine pinned to a 4/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook. He fished with 100-pound pink Yo-Zuri and 100-pound Izorline spectra on a Makira 20 SEA reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod. Van Nguyen of Anaheim won third place for a 189.2-pounder.

Ed Otero's Passing 12/27/2012
by Indy Crew, 1-09-2013
To all the friends and family of Ed Otero, the Independence
would like to give you all our sincere condolences. Ed was truly one of
God's Fisherman of Men. Always wanting to be out on the water. His Wife (Desiree`) said there was no better place to be but on his choice of boats "The Indy". Anyone that fished with Ed over the course of years that he spent on the boat can attest to his friendly nature and willingness to help and assist those that needed help. Loaning his rods and tackle to Anglers that didn't have enough or the right kind to fish certain type or size fish that Jeff the Skipper had lead them onto.. Now Ed you are with the greatest Fisherman of all...Catch the "Bigun" Ed...... You will be missed. Mark, Paul, Jeff, Judy, Doug, Paul M, Kevin, Matt, Tyler, Michel, Rolo.

Good start
by Indy Crew, 1-17-2013
Jeff called in to report that they started fishing, during the first 2 days they have landed 6 cows and about 40 other tuna, the size range is still in the 100 to 150 stocker range. Mark Backes has 2 cows along with the big fish going about 250 pounds. The weather has been gorgeous, warm and flat seas, a big change from the last couple of weeks of windy weather. The guys are making a move tonight in hopes of a faster pace.

Outstanding fishing
by Indy Crew, 1-18-2013
Capt. Jeff Debuys called in tonight to report outstanding action on 130 to 230 pound yellowfin tuna. 4 more cows made it aboard today, 55 tuna for the day with 20 in the 170 to 195 pound range and the rest 130 to 170. The weather continues to be very good with just enough wind to get the kite flying. Lots of time left to fish and very good sign around. Stay tuned for more reports to come. If you are planning to fish with us next year give us a call as many trips are full or very close to sold out. Remember deposits are due on trips now. Thanks for all the support, Capts. Mark Pisano and Paul Strasser.

Incredible fishing!!!
by Indy Crew, 1-19-2013
Today was one of those days that every long range fisherman dreams of. 81 tuna and 20 wahoo was the tally for the day, 14 cows in the butch along with another handful that may make the mark. The rest of the fish are all in the 140 to 198 range. Everything worked today sardines, chunks, squid and skipjack all took their share of the fish. To top things off the weather was very nice also, just epic fishing, we have 3 days left and are hoping for a repeat tomorrow. Thanks for checking in, the Indy guys.

More great fishing
by Indy Crew, 1-20-2013
Hello again, well the bite is still happening for us here on the Independence. Another six cows up to 250, and 60 more of that 140 to 199 pound grade for the day. Today we did have a number of heartbreaks on big fish for whatever reason. Again the weather was good and the fish bite all the usual offerings. We are into the last well with two days to go,so wish us well on the last well!! Thanks for checking in on us, the Indy crew.

Slower! But still good
by Indy Crew, 1-21-2013
Fishing has slowed down a bit, but we are still rolling along catching some very nice fish. Another 5 cows today and 30 more that we keep in the 100 to 199 lb. class, we did release a handful of high 100's as well. Weather continues to be very nice and the report looks good until Thursday. This is our last day fishing and we will start for home at dark. We will report on the final day tonight. Have a good day the Indy guys.

REALLY FAT, REALLY HAPPY,
by Indy Crew, 1-24-2013
ON OUR WAY HOME....we finished up in grand style Tuesday as we had another action packed day with another 5 fish over 200 lb. along with the many 160 to 195 lb. fish that keep us busy through out the day. When the dust cleared we tallied 44 fish before calling it quits. I have to congratulate everyone on board here for participating in this beautiful catch we have here, including the entire crew which plays a big part every trip. Productivity varied from day to day, some days were off the chart crazy good, and some were what we call really well. The slot size 170 lb. to 190 lb. fish were very abundant most every day, which made for some of the best fishing I have seen in a while. Cows were there also for everyone to try for, most fish 215 to 245 lbs. one other key ingredient is weather and fishing conditions which were both excellent. we had a varied group of fisherman on board, the Joe pro's and some that were just starting out, everyone did just fine, with lots of personal bests and high fives going around every day. The ride home has been wet and windy so far, as rain has been rinsing the boat steadily. The remainder of the ride home looks good for us. We will report again with an E T A for Sunday. Thanks for checking in, Jeff and the Indy crew

Independence returns from Hurricane Bank loaded with Yellowfin: A total of 28 Over 200
by Bill Roecker, 1-27-2013
Skipper Jeff DeBuys docked the Independence at Pt. Loma Sportfishing January 27, at the end of a 15-day Seeker trip with Bryan "Bubba" Porter as chartermaster. There were 26 anglers aboard, and after leaving slow fishing at Clarion Island, they found good biters at the Hurricane Bank. Jeff said they scored 14 cows on the best day, with a total of 28 weighed in on the certified scales at the landing. "Outside of an eight-hour squall we had nice weather," said Jeff to dock reporter Bill Roecker, "and the ride home was really flat; it was Roecker Weather."
"Fishing was very good," said chartermaster Porter. "The only problem we had was wind against current." By coincidence, the biggest tuna was the last one weighed. It went 239 pounds, and won first place and the Seeker Trophy for Ron Green, pictured above of Ridgecrest, who bagged it with one of the boat's kite outfits. The fish bit a squid on a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook, with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Avet 50 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. "He fought for an hour," said Green. "He took me around the boat twice. I got bit around nine a.m. and he came up on the port corner."
Jim Bowman of San Diego won second place for a 234-pounder. He also had one at 205 pounds. He said he baited sardines on 7/0 Owner ringed Super Mutu hooks. He fished with 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Avet 30 W reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.
Mark Backes of Del Mar won third place for a 233.8-pound tuna that bit his sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu. He said it took and hour and 15 minutes to bring to the boat on 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 100-pound Blackwater spectra. He fished with a Tiagra 30 reel and a Calstar 760 M rod.
Bob Hager of Tumwater, WA (home of Olympia beer) got a 205-pounder, two at 206, and one of 226 pounds. The big one took 45 minutes to beat, he said, and struck a salami mackerel on an 8/0 Mustad 76921 hook and 130-pound Izorline tied to 130-pound Izorline spectra. He used an Avet 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. The big one took him twice around the Indy, he said.
Steve Kunitake got a 220-pounder on a sardine and a ringed Owner Super Mutu hook tied to 100-pound Soft Steel Ultra. He used 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Makira 30 reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod. It was his first cow and fought for half an hour. He also had a fish at 203 pounds.
Frank Backes of Colorado Spring, CO used a chunk to deck a 215-pounder that ate a chunk on a 9/0 Mustad Demon hook. He used the boat's kite rig.
Phil Havelicek of San Francisco caught a 214-pounder with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 100-pound Izorline fluorocabon and 130-pound Line One spectra. He fished with an Avet 50 N reel and a Calstar 700 XXH rod.
Chartermaster Porter of Downey bagged a brace of yellowfin at 209 and 213 pounds. He fished sardines on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 100-pound Soft Steel Ultra and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Makira 20 reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod.
Ken Buzzell of San Pedro popped a 213-pounder with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Owner Gorilla hook and 100-pound Yo-Zuri tied to 100-pound Line One spectra. He fished with an Avet HXW Raptor reel and a Super Seeker 1 X 3 rod.
Duane Sawyer of Lemon Grove bagged a 213-pound yellowfin with a chunk on a 7/0 Mustad Demon hook and 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon. He employed 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Avet 50 r4eel and a Super Seeker 3 X 5 rod.
Gerard Fitzgerald spent 40 minutes getting to know a 212-pounder that swallowed his sardine on a 5/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon. He used 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 30 reel and a Calstar 7465 rod.
Tom Fujita of Harbor City got a 209-pounder, his first cow, with a flying fish on a 10/ Mustad 7691 hook under the kite with the boat's kite outfit.
Tom Golding of Cerritos took a 208-pound tuna with a squid on a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook under the kite, with the boat's kite outfit.
Mike Shelton of Florence, AZ found a 207-pounder chewing on his skipjack pinned on a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook tied to 130-pound Momoi and 130-pound Line One spectra. He fished with a Penn 50 reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod.
Vladimir Kustudic of San Diego got a 206-pound tuna that sucked in his salami mackerel on a 10/0 Mustad Demon hook and 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon. He used 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.
Cindy Fancher, Photo #1 of Bend, OR bagged a brace at 200 and 204 pounds. She fished with sardines under the kite with the boat's outfit. "It was a pleasant experience," she said of catching her first cows.
Tom Myers of Torrance got a 204-pounder with a sardine on a ringed Super Mutu hook and 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon. He said he fished with 130-pound Line One spectra on an Avet 30 W reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod.
Jeff Nichols of Huntington Beach bagged a 201-pounder, his first cow. It came in just 15 minutes after making an error involving a squid under the kite on the boats' kite rig.
Bob Filson caught a 201-pound tuna.
Bob Buckland of Simi Valley took a 200-pounder home with him after catching it on a sardine on a 5/0 Hayabusa hook tied to 100-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 100-pound P-Line CXX line and 130-pound Tuffline spectra. He said he fished with an Avet SDS reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod, and finished his tuna off in 20 minutes.
